It’s never too late to seek orthodontic treatment. We welcome and treat patients of all ages, including adults. As new treatment options, like Invisalign® and lingual braces, have become available, more adults are seeking orthodontic solutions than ever before.
Whether you have never received any orthodontic treatment before, or if you are seeking additional correction to prior orthodontic treatment, we have a solution for you. Adult orthodontic treatment can improve the longevity of the teeth by improving the bite, which allows all the teeth to function together properly.
It is important to know that complications associated with an adult case may require close cooperation with a general dentist. The position of the teeth can be moved at any age, but tooth movement may be slowed due to certain systemic health conditions. In general, the rate of tooth movement in an adult patient is identical to an adolescent’s.
Many adults visit our office because they understand the importance of good oral health and they wish to improve their appearance. For patients of all ages, oral hygiene plays a huge role in the success of your orthodontic treatment; however, periodontal disease is more prevalent in adults than in children. Consistent oral hygiene habits are the keys to avoiding periodontal disease and experiencing the best treatment outcome possible.
Because an adult has non-growing bones, the greatest difference in orthodontic treatment is when orthopedic jaw correction is needed. If the jaw structure in an adult patient is severely misaligned, a combined orthodontic/orthognathic surgery treatment may be recommended. In these cases, we work closely with an oral surgery specialist to complete the treatment.
